That musty towel smell is usually residue: detergent film, softener, and lint feeding buildup inside the drum and door seal. One hot cycle with a machine cleaner clears it; a monthly habit keeps it gone.
What you need
- Washing Machine Cleaner
- An empty machine
- The hottest cycle it runs
The routine
1. Run it empty and hot
Drop the cleaner into the empty drum and run the hottest, longest cycle. No clothes; the formula needs to work on the machine, not the laundry.
2. Wipe the door seal
On front loaders, pull back the rubber gasket and wipe the channel where water pools. This is where most odor lives.
Tip: Leave the door ajar between washes. A dry drum cannot feed buildup.
3. Repeat monthly
Set a cadence to match your use. One tablet a month keeps residue from reaccumulating to the smelly stage.
Honest expectation
What this solves: This clears odor caused by residue and buildup. A sewage-like smell from the standpipe or a drainage fault is plumbing, not cleaning.
